Motorcycle Test Nerves & How To Defeat Them

As the day of the motorcycle test approaches, only a cold-hearted, steel-brained borderline psychopath will be able to avoid feeling a rising tide of panic. Emotions can swing wildly, and the more you want to pass, the more extreme they can be. It’s not unusual to start having dreams in which you’re piloting an out-of-control, brakeless bike at extreme speed through a busy shopping centre in the nude, often while being pursued by angry members of your immediate family. These dreams are normal, and in some cases are so normal that you’ll continue to have them for the rest of your life. However, it is possible to contain your bike test nerves – even to conquer them. Let’s take a look at how…

Record Number of People Taking Their Motorcycle Test

Recently, we looked at how the number of young riders taking the motorcycle test in the UK had fallen off dramatically since the introduction of changes to the test a couple of years ago. Now, however, new figures have emerged which seem to show that the appeal of biking – independence, freedom and the ability to avoid traffic – is shining through again. The overall number of people taking the test is on the rise. That’s good news for the biking community of course; more new riders means there’ll be fewer opportunities for the voices of Britain’s bikers to be ignored, fewer bike shops closing, and, potentially, better deals for those buying bikes, equipment, insurance and the like.

Anyone who’s about to take their motorcycle test in the UK could be forgiven for wondering whether some areas are better than others in terms of pass rates. There are in fact, differences, sometimes quite large ones, across the country. The government publishes a handy summary of these statistics on a regular basis. Let’s take a look at the 2014 numbers and try to answer the question; is it worth taking your bike test at somewhere other than your closest test centre?

Test Cheats On The Rise

Recent reports from major news outlets, as well as the motoring press, have claimed that the number of people cheating their way through the driving test has increased. One of the most popular methods of fraudulently obtaining a licence appears to be to “hire” someone who looks a bit like you – and can drive to an acceptable standard, obviously – and get them to take the test. Government figures, produced by the DVSA, show that 677 cases for 2014/15 have been recorded so far, which, when the year-end figures are compiled after April 2015, is likely to make this the worst year ever for test cheats. The previous record was 816, for 2011/12.

How the Motorbike Test Has Changed

In some ways, your parents’ generation had it easy. And for their parents (or grandparents) getting started on a motorcycle was literally as complicated as buying a stamp. If you’re spending your free time at the moment trying to learn the Highway Code, mentally spotting hazards as you walk down the street and dreaming about hair-raising U-turns, don’t be too jealous of how much easier the test was for people of yesteryear. At least, these days, you can be fairly sure that most of your fellow road users have at least had an eye test.
